All about Blackpool!

When you hear about a donkey ride on the beach you automatically think of Blackpool, the seaside town nestled in the North West of England (Lancashire) situated on the west coast by the Irish Sea.  Blackpool was not always the hustle and bustle that it is today, previously a small coastal town and remained this way up until the mid-18th century when everyman and his donkey started to travel to the coast for a well earned bathe in the salty waters, deemed as the new fashionable thing to do to improve well-being!   I would suggest if you wish to do the same then you have a small window of about 6 days (I mean weeks) to dip your toes in to the Irish sea.  Since those early days the overall local  economy has hardly changed, well and truly reliant on the tourism industry. Moving forwards to the here and now and Blackpool still shines as one of Britain’s most visited and popular destinations, not suprisingly bringing in millions of holiday makers each and every year.

Fun and excitement can be found all along the main strip and is why so many return time and time again.  The world famous Pleasure Beach Resort offers many exciting rides including a quite enjoyable (if you close your eyes) rollercoaster where your photo shall be taken at the most inopportune moment :-)  Now you are fully high on adrenaline why not try out another rollercoaster, this time an indoor one.  It is actually a waterslide rollercoaster and can be found inside the Sandcastle Waterpark.

Blackpool certainly comes up trumps as far as overall entertainment is concerned, something for mum and dad aswell as the kids!  The now famous promenade is the place to be, oozing fun! Take a peek around Madame Tussauds and see the latest celeb line up, then afterwards off to the Sea Life Centre to see what creatures from the deep are lurking around every next corner. Blackpool is also a great base to use if you wish to explore the surrounding areas. Check out our great variety of affordable accommodations to suit all budgets from simple B&Bs and guest houses to top quality Hotel establishments. There are a huge range of activities and attractions to be found in and around Blackpool, but if you’re still not convinced check out the list of attractions our Search4ahotel.com team have put together .

Local Attractions

Pleasure Beach Resort

As we mentioned above, the Pleasure Beach Resort offers many thrills for the brave hearted.  The numero uno has to be the 'Pepsi Max Big One' (other soft drinks are available) however other rides offer more than enough of an adrenaline rush to keep you queuing up for more! Including: 'Brave Valhalla', a ride in total darkness with some spectacular special effects. Back to the coaster rides with 'Infusion' no fewer than 5 loops to make you regret that extra beer with lunch and if thats not enough its suspended completely over water. Slightly more relaxed rides such as the Steeplechase and the Grand National can be found along with so many more to fill up your day!

Sandcastle Waterpark

Looking for the largest UK indoor Water Park? You've found it! No fewer than 18 attractions and slides with an average tropical temperature of 29c. As always in these places all the family are catered for. 2012 has seen new additions, the slides slip away from the top of the park's roof with a quick tour outside before returning back inside the building.  There are two new slides, Montazooma - a mat slide with full 360 deg. loops.  The Aztec Falls will increase your heart rate as you fall away in to the darkness of an electrifying bowl (Please let us know how you got on but only after you find your trunks!).  Other rides include Sidewinder - A vertical waterslide, infact the World's very first!  Another thrill of a ride is Masterblaster which is actually the Worlds longest indoor waterslide rollercoaster. As mentioned this is a place for all of the family and includes chilled out rides such as the relaxing Ushi Gushi Action River, the Shimmering Shallows - also a tranquil affair and not forgetting the family favourite Wave Pool called Typhoon Lagoon. There is still more fun to be had for the younger kiddie winkles in shape of the Caribbean Storm Treehouse, a pretty cool play area for the wannabe explorers but beware of the giant coconut who will unceremoniously tip 600 gallons of water over those brave little pirates!

Churchtown

Churchtown is a village located approximately 17miles to the north of Blackpool and is home to the well known and loved Botanic Gardens, which were first laid out in the late 1800's. More and more of us are searching for places to go on a budget and with no admission fee, the Botanic Gardens is an ideal place to spend a relaxing day away from the hustle and bustle of blackpool. The Botanic Gardens has proved to be a very popular day trip away from the seaside and helps recharge the batteries before heading back to enjoy a night on the town!.

Blackpool Zoo

If you make it to Blackpool you must go to the Zoo, such a popular destination with lakes, mature parkland and superb enclosures providing homes to many worldwide endangered and exotic species. Tigers, lions, giraffes elephants, penguins, apes plus all the usual family favourites. The Zoo is open all year long, so make sure to fit in some time to say hi to those adorable animals. The sea lion pool is infact the largest i the UK and recently extended and fully refurbished the area giving visitors a much more intimate experience with all of the splendid birds and animals. Back in 2010 Blackpool Zoo also opened a walk through wallaby enclosure allowing the loveable animals to make the decsion on how close 'they' want to get to the visitors.(Wise choice, those Hen Parties can get wild!)

The Blackpool Illuminations

Well what can I say!  I have Very fond memories of The Blackpool Illuminations, as they had a big part to play in my childhood.  The lights have been shining brightly ever so slightly before I first started going, back in 1879! ;-)  They were actually described as ‘Artificial Sunshine’ and for over 130 years have glowed like a beacon pulling in many thousands of visitors ever since!. The Illuminations have never lost their magic touch and the smile on a kids face when seeing the display for the first time, well, it lights the strip up even more and helps create an very special atmosphere!  Of course the technology and styles are always upgrading to entice even more visitors. They are also doing their best to be as 'green' and efficient as possible and to be fair to the group in charge, Blackpool Illuminations only ever use 'green electricity' from resources of a renewable nature such as, small-scale hydro, Wind, Biogas and landfill.  The mystical event happens at the end of Summer and runs in to the start of winter. (please make sure to check this years dates).

2012 Dates - Aug 31st - Nov 4th
