All about Bournemouth

Head down to the south coast of the UK to the county of Dorset and you shall find the quintessentially british seaside resort of Bournemouth. Toursits flock there by their thousands and make it one of the most popular holiday resorts for both UK holiday makers and overseas tourists. With so much to do in Bournemouth you might want to consider making a few days of it!  The award winning beaches stretch for seven miles, with crystal blue sea and beautiful golden sands.  Water sports offer something for all ages and the bustling nightlife helps to give the town  a warm cosmopolitan feel.  The sea has a more continental feel to it, than a typical british resort and that only entices one to take the plunge for a summer mornings dip before breakfast!  If you prefer to stock up on a hearty breakfast before you brave the sea, then why not book some afternoon body boarding or surf lessons?  

Restaurants, award winning gardens, an array of shops, holiday accommodation, buzzing nightlife, events & activities for all budgets, along with an endless amount of attractions, Bournemouth offers you lots to do or for the easily persuaded, can convince you to do nothing at all!  Do you really want to sit on the glorious beach all day? well to be honest I don't blame you! However if you want to stretch those legs you could embark upon one of the most pleasant and rewarding walks that Bournemouth has to offer!  Starting at either Boscombe or bournemouth Pier to enjoy the very popular 'Pier to Pier' walk. Take a relaxing Stroll and enjoy the scenery along this beautiful promenade. Take in all of what this UK holiday resort has to offer. Especially look out for the views across the bay, with Purbeck hills on one side and the Isle of Wight on the other. After over endulging on those views, make sure that you insist to your friends or family that you quite simply have to go to the toilet!! Choose from any of the local restaurants, hotels, bars or cafes for your pit stop and act totally suprised to find traditional English Tea, iced buns and ice-creams all asking to be consumed (your party will thank you for it - even the ones who are strictly on a diet) to coin a phrase that I once used many years ago "ohhh I'm on my holiday's" :-)

Having not been to bournemouth for a number of years now, writing this overview guide has certainly brought back some wonderful memories. Bournemouth Attractions

Brownsea Island Nature Reserve

The Island of Brownsea is located in Poole Harbour in somewhat of a dramatic fashion, with unbroken views over to Purbeck Hills. The diverse wildlife and habitats include a population of red squirrels. The area is looked after by the National Trust and is situated in Poole Harbour, with a large lagoon which is sheltered; to help protect summer breeding birds. For bird lovers out there spending a day exploring its lakes, flooded woodland,  reed bed and a pine wood is never going to disappoint. There's no less than 5 bird hides that overlook the lagoon, reed bed and lakes.

Bournemouth's Parks & Gardens

The Gardens are seperated in to three areas but all have a certain Victorian beauty about them.  Lower, Central and Upper Gardens can be found from sea level to above the main town centre.  The Gardens (especially the Lower Gardens) are often used for concerts and Art Exhibitions during the summer months.

Corfe Castle

An iconic survivor to the English Civil War can still be enjoyed, although Parliamentarians partially demolished it back in 1646.  Like most attractions in and around Bournemouth the views are simply stunning and these castle ruins are no different, offering a romantic feel to this particular day out. Absorb over 1000 years worth of history from a castle that acted not only as a fortress but also a royal palace. Treason and treachery await you around every corner.

Sherborne Castle

Back in 1594 Sir Walter Raleigh built the castle and ever since 1617 has remained a stately home of the Digby family. The castle boasts over 400 years of English history and various ellegant decorative styles. Art collections to get any true history buff's heart racing along with quality porcelain and furniture. 'Drop' down in to the cellars to find Raleigh's original kitchen, his treasures and artefacts of the family can also be found.

The National Motor Museum

Over 250 vehicles tell the story of Formula 1 Racers and World Land Speed Record Breakers alike. Buckle up for an enjoyable road trip through one hundred years of motoring. Some of the latest cars on show include vehicles that have gone past the normal boundaries of endurance, be it challenging terrains or extreme conditions.  Of course how can I forget to mention the 007 Exhibition - Mr bond has kindly donated the actual cars from some of the films including that unforgetable submarine Lotus! It's not only myself who loved that car (honest!) It also won awards as the nation's favourite Film/On-Screen vehicle.

Salisbury Cathedral

You cannot help but be inspired by the tranquility and sheer beauty of one of the (if not the) finest british cathedrals from medieval times. Expect to be welcomed in to the cathedral and enjoy the surrounding museums and historic buildings within all of the the lawned 8 acres. This Early English Gothic design did'nt always boast britain's tallest spire (123m/404ft), this was added in years to come, however back inside you shall unravel over 800 yrs of history from Europe's oldest working clock (1386) to the preserved Magna Carta (1215)

New Forest

Hire a car for the day and take a 30 minute drive outside of Bournemouth to the ancient New Forest, although ancient it is actually England's newest National Park and includes many villages, quaint towns and splendid open spaces to explore. Tranquil walks and forest glades have remained untouched from back in the days of 1079 when a certain William the conqueror would have used the forest for his 'Royal Playground'  It was a hip and trendy place for the Kings and queens of the time to attend.
